The silent business risk SMEs can’t ignore
Gemma Farina, Managing Director of GFHR Consulting, takes a look at the consequences of burnout and why small to medium sized businesses need to empower themselves with knowledge on how to spot it and how to prevent it…
In small businesses, burnout rarely makes a dramatic entrance. It creeps in quietly – often masked as ‘just a busy period’ or a temporary stretch of long hours. But for SMEs where every role is pivotal, unnoticed burnout can quickly impact performance, decision making and overall team wellbeing.
Spot the Early Signs
Burnout doesn’t start with someone hitting the wall. It usually shows up first as subtle shifts: irritability, reduced focus, wavering motivation or a dip in confidence. In closeknit teams, these changes are felt immediately — especially when it’s a key contributor or the founder themselves.
Pay attention to behaviour, too. Withdrawing from discussions, working later to keep up, or finding routine decisions increasingly difficult are often early signals that pressure is building beyond what’s sustainable.
Practical Ways SMEs Can Reduce Burnout Risk
You don’t need a large HR team to create a healthier, more resilient culture. Small, intentional actions make a real difference:
- Regular check-ins: Brief, honest conversations help surface concerns before they escalate.
- Clear priorities: When everything feels urgent, stress intensifies. Be explicit about what truly matters.
- Healthy boundaries: Leaders set the tone. Encouraging realistic finish times helps normalise balance.
- Redistribute when needed: A short-term adjustment to workload is far more effective than pushing through.
- Create breathing space: Even a short walk, a pause between meetings or a no email lunch can restore clarity.
