Tunbridge Wells Borough Council showcases plans for the future of its shopping centre, with a vision to transform it into a destination where people can shop, eat, meet and enjoy leisure activities…
New images give residents, businesses and visitors a first look at proposals to transform Palm Court at Royal Victoria Place into a brighter, more welcoming and flexible space.
The plans have already received planning permission and will now be considered as part of the Council’s decision-making process in the coming weeks, with a final decision due at Full Council on 11 November.
The proposals focus on modernising Palm Court, improving accessibility and creating a flexible space that can accommodate a range of uses and events. They form part of a wider vision to help Royal Victoria Place evolve from a traditional shopping centre into a destination where people can shop, meet, eat, spend time and enjoy leisure activities.
The plans would also create larger retail units, improve facilities for visitors and bring the existing basement space back into active use through a new leisure offer – creating more reasons for people to visit and spend time in the town centre.
Palm Court has changed very little since Royal Victoria Place opened in the 1980s. The existing roof is reaching the end of its life, while the space can feel dark and dated compared with modern retail and leisure destinations.
A brighter and more welcoming space
The proposed design would introduce a new roof, bringing more natural light into Palm Court. The existing basement opening, downward escalator and scenic lift would be removed, creating a more open, accessible and flexible central space for visitors to enjoy.
The aim is to create a space that feels welcoming, contemporary and fit for the future.
The proposals include new toilets, with family-friendly and fully accessible facilities in a more convenient location. The improvements are designed to make Palm Court more welcoming and easier to use for everyone who visits.
A space that can adapt throughout the year
The redesigned Palm Court could host a variety of events, activities and exhibitions, creating opportunities to bring more life and energy into the centre.
The flexible space could help make Royal Victoria Place a destination that people want to visit regularly, rather than simply a place to shop.
A place to spend time – more than a shopping destination
The proposals would create a flexible space where people can meet, relax and spend time. The aim is to encourage visitors to stay longer and enjoy everything the town centre has to offer.
These proposals form part of the
The Council’s wider vision to ensure Royal Victoria Place continues to evolve and meet the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.
By creating a modern, more flexible Palm Court, improving accessibility, attracting new retailers and bringing the basement space back into use for leisure, the plans aim to support a vibrant and successful town centre for years to come.
